Rebecca Elswick lives in the coalfields of southwest Virginia where she was born and raised the daughter and granddaughter of coal miners. She holds a B.S. in English and Special Education and an M.Ed in Education from East Tennessee State University. A lifelong educator, she currently teaches Advanced Placement English, Photojournalism and Creative Writing at Grundy High School.

She lives with her husband, son and four dogs in Grundy. Her twins are off at college. Her fiction has appeared in the Literary Journal of the Virginia Writing Project, the Jimnson Weed, and Bewildering Stories. Her nonfiction has appeared in the Virginia Journal of Education and the Journal of the Virginia Writing Project.

Her passions include reading and writing fiction and mentoring a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team. In March 2008, she published the team's history “Follow the Yellow Brick Road.”

She applied and was selected to study at the Appalachian Writer's Workshop at the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky in July of 2008.
