Light and Dark

by Arnold Hollander

Light filters through the blinds
caressing each and everyone,
gently waking in the morning,
kisses from a rising sun.

It cheers us as we rise,
starting a brand new day,
and speaks to our better selves
promising it will stay.

But darkness starts to make the scene
slowly blocking out the light,
creeping, crawling, covering,
contemptuously it brings the blight.

The evil in the dark is masked,
but we sense some Stygian goal,
arriving though unexpected,
in time to steal a soul.

A clock ticks past the hours
that darkness called its own,
allowing light into the place,
the place we call our home.
